Kaa Iya del Gran Chaco National Park
- Itinerary of 3 Days 2 Nights
- Itinerary of 4 Days 3 Nights
From The city of Santa Cruz
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Joseravi and Tucavaca
3 Days 2 Nights
1st Day At 08:00, departure towards the community of Joseravi, which is adjacent with Kaa Iya National Park. This trip crosses the Eastern Lowlands agricultural area, which grows soybean, sunflower, and others types of grain. There, we can also realize the relentless advance of the agricultural frontier from 30 Kilometers (18.6 Miles) off Santa Cruz to the very limits of the park. This 184-Kilometer (114.3 Miles) journey lasts about 3 hours during the dry season, but in the rainy season it can last up to 6 hours or more, due to the conditions of the dirt road, which has some difficult muddy sections.
Once in the community of Joseravi, we will take lodgings in the community hostel, which was specially built to accommodate the visitors of the park. Depending on our time of arrival, we will visit the available tracks into the Chaqueño Forest located within the limits of the Kaa Iya Park, at approximately 4 Kilometers (2.5 Miles) from the hostel in Joseravi. These tracks go about 8 Kilometers (5 Miles) into the Chaqueño Forest where we may be able to observe such mammals as the Giant Anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla), the Giant Armadillo (Priodontes maximus), and many other animals and/or birds which inhabit the area. We can also hike at night, depending on the available time and the preferences of the visitors.
Dinner and spend the night in the Community hostel at Joseravi.
2nd Day After breakfast, we will leave by vehicle towards another entrance of the Kaa Iya Park where we can enter to a location agreed on with the visitors depending on how long they want to walk through a vehicle road. Lunch and rest in the community hostel. In the afternoon, we go for a walk around in Kaa Iya Park to a lagoon that may still have water, where we can observe crocodile or some mammals. At night, we can visit a saltpeter bed in order to have more chances of spotting mammals.
3rd Day Before breakfast, we will hike around the park, taking whatever we need to have breakfast in the woods. This hike must be made very early in the morning, when the wildlife is more active.
Lunch in the community hostel, rest, and then we get ready to leave this great park. We arrive at the city of Santa Cruz late afternoon or at night, depending on the time of the year and the conditions of the road. Once in the city of Santa Cruz, we will drive you to your hotel or residence.

Kaa Iya del Gran Chaco National Park
Joseravi and Tucavaca
From the city of Santa Cruz
4 Days 3 Nights
1st Day At 08:00, departure towards the community of Joseravi, which is adjacent with Kaa Iya National Park. This trip crosses the Eastern Lowlands agricultural area, which grows soybean, sunflower, and several types of grain. There, we can also realize the relentless advance of the agricultural frontier from 30 Kilometers (18.6 Miles) off Santa Cruz to the very limits of the park. This 184-Kilometer (114.3 Miles) journey lasts about 3 hours during the dry season, but in the rainy season, it can last up to 6 hours or more, due to the conditions of the dirt road, which has some difficult muddy sections.
These tracks go about 8 Kilometers (5 Miles) into the Chaqueño Forest where we may be able to observe such mammals as the Silky Anteater (Cyclopes didactylus), the Giant Armadillo (Priodontes maximus), and many other animals and/or birds which inhabit the area. We can also hike at night, depending on the available time and the preferences of the visitors.
Dinner and overnight in the hostel at Joseravi.
2nd Day After breakfast, we leave by vehicle towards another entry into Kaa Iya Park, where we will drive through the road that was enabled by the oil companies for the laying of gas pipelines to the Republic of Brazil. We will open the gates that prevent the access to unauthorized vehicles. We will be able to view the Chaqueño primary forest on the sides of the road; we must be aware of wild mammals such as peccaries and/or tapirs, which are common in the area, among other mammals (even felines). Birds are also quite common in the park, for instance the “charatas” (Cracidae family). Our destination is camp Izozog, located at approximately 55 Kilometers (34.2 Miles) from Joseravi, by the gas pumping plant of the same name. From this location, we can hike in the afternoon to walk on the main way.
At night, we can leave on a vehicle with a Spot Light t or hiking with hand flashlights in order to have more possibilities of observing animals in the wild. This section of the gas pipeline is more interesting, since there are no human settlements for at least 100 Kilometers (62.2 Miles) on each side of the road. Therefore, the observation of deer, peccaries and/or tapirs is almost guaranteed even though felines are also very common in the surroundings: this park is known as one of the most populated by the jaguar (Panthera onca) in the world
Dinner and spend the night in Izozog
3rd Day After breakfast, we leave very early in the morning with destination to Tucavaca at approximately 105 Kilometers (65.3 Miles) from Izozog Camp. We will continue on the only way that exists there, which is the gas pipeline way. Both sides of the way will still be covered by the forest, but as we advance, we will notice the patent change from the Chaqueño forest to the Chiquitano forest, which is taller.
During dry season, the condition of the road are quite good, but during the rainy season these conditions change, which is why the travel time can change considerably, turning this trip into a real adventure on wheels. This track is also an opportunity to spot more mammals or birds.
Arrival to Tucavaca; this location is still inside the park. Tucavaca was a camp for the oil company workers during the construction of the gas pipeline. Now, what is left of it is used by the Kaa Iya Park Rangers as their camp. There are plans of constructing new buildings for the Park Rangers and cabins for the visitors.
In the surroundings, there are tracks that were used for the monitoring of felines; we could hike on these tracks depending on our time of arrival and our available time. We can also walk along the road that is parallel to the gas pipeline.
Dinner and spend the night in Tucavaca.
4th Day After breakfast, we leave for the population of San José de Chiquitos, which is at 95 Kilometers (59 Miles) away on a dirt road, which is no longer parallel to the gas pipeline. From San José to the city Santa Cruz, there are 264 Kilometers (164 Miles); almost this entire road runs parallel to a train railroad, different from the roads used in the previous days. During this return trip, we will also stop wherever the visitors want to take some pictures.
Arrival to the city of Santa Cruz in the afternoon, where we will leave you in your residence or hotel.
